Car insurance
One of the most important worries of adult life is probably insurance. Once you move out and are not covered by your parents’ insurance anymore, you will soon find that it is very important to have your health, your house as well as all your possessions and even your life and things like your pension income covered by some sort of insurance, so that in case something unexpected happens, you can cover costs in some way and you do not have to come up for them using your private funds. Your car is a very important possession that you should definitely insure. Just think, how long did it take you to save up for it, how many times did you picture the perfect car in your head? Would it not be a shame if all the money were wasted because you had an accident in which your uninsured car broke? This is why insurance is crucial.
What does it cover?
One thing that can be quite confusing about insurances in general is that you can never be quite sure what cases they cover and which they do not. For every insurance, there are limits that you can set yourself, i.e. how much you would like the insurance to cover. The rate you will pay for insurance will vary accordingly, but it is important not to set your limits too low because by doing so, you could set yourself at risk financially. A good car insurance deal should definitely cover a few basic things. If you happen to have an accident, it is important that your insurance include bodily injury liability, so the insurance should come up for other people’s injuries or in worse cases, death. This means that the insurance will pay any medical bills, treatments or pain suffering money that the injured want or demand. It should also cover any legal costs that occur should someone take you to court. Another important thing is property damage liability, which means that your insurance will cover any damage caused by your car to somebody else’s property. Usually this means their car, but if you run into somebody’s fence or a wall that is part of someone’s property, that will be covered as well. Another option you have is comprehensive coverage, this covers your car in any case other than an accident, for example, in case it gets stolen or is damaged by flood, fire or animals. You might also want to have collision coverage provided by your insurance, meaning that the cost of fixing your vehicle when it hits another is covered by your insurance company, up to the limit that you choose to set. Then, you can get all these forms of insurances in the “uninsured motorist” variation, meaning that if something happens where the insurance of the other person involved in the accident should cover the damage (if they are at fault), but they do not have insurance, then your insurance will come up for that, too. Obviously there are other forms of insurance, but these are the most basic ones and are a good way to start safely.
Which insurance to choose?
As stated above, you would want an insurance that covers most (or all) of the possible accident or damage causes, at the lowest price possible, preferably. Do make sure that you insure your car with a reputable company. If you can, ask your friends or your parents for recommendations, or compare prices and quality online. It is good to pay a low rate for your car insurance, but make sure you are not underinsured and that no financial risk is involved for you. You can get many tips from the insurance company of your choice as to what rates to choose and what coverage is important, but if you are undecided on what company to choose or where to go, you might look around the internet for help.
As you can imagine, driving a car is quite risky and there are many things that can happen. It is therefore imperative that as soon as you hold the keys to your new car in your hands, you start worrying about how and where to insure it. It does not matter if you can only afford a very basic rate – driving safely is vital.
